Well this already is getting old

Normally, my posts are friends locked, but I still can't seem to use security options here, and disabling javascript (which I've been told is a temporary fix to this problem) so I'm reviewing options, including Dreamwidth. I don't want to lose my momentum, but I would like to control who sees what content. It's not that I'm posting anything I wouldn't be willing to anyone else in my life, but my experience with Bookface is that there are a lot of twats out there, and I'd like to reduce their access to what I say.

I really like this place, and I'd like to keep using it. If Dreamwidth is a better answer, I'll go there, and see about syncing it to here so the rest of you can keep following my wacky adventures.

Not much going on the last couple of days. Work is empty so I'm telecommuting the rest of this week, or most of it anyway.

Preparing for Dry January. Last night, I didn't drink anything and feel a noticeable difference in how I feel today as opposed to the night before when I did have a few drinks. This was the case 6 years ago when I did the reboot. So, clearly alcohol is something I need to manage carefully if I'm going to continue to use it.

I need to get new running shoes. Unfortunately, most of the places I've gone to locally for running shoes are closed. I'm particularly pissed that Pacers closed their doors in Silver Spring, but figured that having City Sports would be an adequate substitute. Then they closed their doors. I'm left with Footlocker which has two brands: Nike and Adidas. I wear neither of those. So, it looks like I'll have to look out of Silver Spring for my running shoes from now on.

I'm also contemplating a membership at Washington Sports Club. Currently, my options are

  • the NOAA gym which is not great, but it is convenient

  • LA Fitness which is almost as good moneywise as NOAA gym but isn't much better. The locker room smells pretty nasty. Not a great option

  • Washington Sports Club: Probably the best option in terms of facilities, but also the priciest. It helps that I have at least one friend who goes there, so that's a plus.

  • Ultimate it depends on how much I'm willing to spend and whether or not that money will be a good investment. One of the goals for the next year is to manage my finances more tightly. I already do a pretty good job, but I know I can do better.

So, that's about it for now.

I have a DW account but the forum is really limited. I can't see posts going back after a certain amount of time. No photo option, you have to use an outside source like Photobucket. It is a very pale shade of LJ-when LJ actually works.

There's a DSW near you on Ellsworth -- I know guys don't tend to think about DSW, but they generally have a decent selection of athletic shoes for both men and women. I'm a Saucony gal, and I can always find mine there.

Yeah, I should check that. I tend to prefer buying from pro stores rather than discount stores. My philosophy, quoted from an old (not very good) John Malkovich movie is that when it comes to shoes, food and sex, money is no object. DSW always feels kind of like a crap shoot, and I prefer to know exactly what I'm getting. I know which brand and type of shoe will give me the kind of support I need. The same goes for casual and dress shoes. I pretty much only wear Cole Haan at this point, as they combine comfort with interesting style and can be gotten at reasonable prices.

For me, if a gym isn't convenient then I'm not using it. When I switched offices 5 years back I lost my in-building gym. Loved being able to do a midday workout, and while it's not WSC level, it was great as it was easy. If NOAA has a culture of being ok with midday workouts, then I'd go for it.

Running shoes? At this point I sadly go online. I'll occasionally go into a fleet feet but they're pushing squishy shoes and i want minimal drop which isn't in fashion anymore.

Convenience is important, but WSC, while maybe not quite as convenient as the NOAA gym, is still only a short walk from my office, and has the advantage of being open on weekends.

LA fitness is pretty much a non starter. I'll take the NOAA gym over that smelly armpit any day.

We'll see what happens. NOAA gym will probably be what I stick with.

I tried Dreamwidth because the Russian parentage of LiveJournal made me feel nervous, but I got very little traction there in terms of making friends and getting any kind of interaction happening.

Have you tried a different browser? I have not had this happen to me yet.

I belong to NYSC which I think is the same thing as Washington Sports Club. I'm mostly happy with it: one thing I've noticed is that not all the locations have the same amenities, so if you're getting the membership that only allows you to use one location, choose carefully. But having a friend who goes there is a real plus from a motivation standpoint, at least for me.

If you know what size fits you in the brand that you like, can't you order them directly from the manufacturer? I wear two particular models from New Balance. They make a sneaker with anti-roll support because I tend to pronate my heels especially doing squats. I wear the same size all the time so I get them directly from them. They also have their own stores: I've been buying mine at the one in Rehoboth Beach because no sales tax.

I've tried 3 different browsers and gotten the same result. Whatever's going on is definitely not browser specific. You're probably on a different set of servers or something.

The only shoes I'll buy online are Cole Haan because they've yet to make a shoe that doesn't fit me almost perfectly. Running shoes, I'm much more anal about.

I guess so! That is weird though. Looking at the support forum it appears you are not alone. Is that the only thing that isn't working?

I don't blame you, re. the shoes. But I buy the same model in the same size and so far it's been okay. The sales people at the two New Balance stores I've been to also seemed pretty knowledgeable.

Good luck! I've been enjoying your posts; would hate to see you leave!

I've no plans to leave. I need this place in whatever form I can get it, and I can't go back to the screaming echo chamber of insanity that Facebook is. I don't think I realized how much I despise that place until I spent some time here away from it.

Just to say DW works well for me (I've been using it since 2009) and has been more lively and full of good people, communities and comments for me. It's also better maintained and the interface is a lot easier (for me) to use.

Oh and if you crosspost something access-locked/friends-locked, or to a custom filter that has the same name as your LJ filter, that works fine too. :)

Livejournal will always essentially be a sort of daily place to jot down my thoughts of the day. I have plans to make use of my named blog (which I'll link later) but the intention for that is to be a somewhat more "finished" product, and probably more of a professional blog. At least that's what I have intended.

Sure! Happy if I can help. I'm called hollymath there, and I'm about to spend all day in airports and planes, but after that I'll think about some recommendations of engaging writers/commenters :)

would love to see that list, too!

I have my whole journal set as friends only and if I want to make a post public I can. I rarely do that anymore, but it appears to still be posting that way.

I was a member of LA Fitness for several years, but a year and a half ago I switched to Lifetime Fitness. $50 more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The locker room is HUGE, and they have an outdoor pool. And they're open 24 hours so I can go after work when I want to which I do in the Spring and Fall before the weather gets really cold. LA Fitness was okay, but everything was smaller, the locker rooms and the pool. Three lanes vs. the six at Lifetime. Three lanes means two of them are against the wall. Which I hate.

My posts are locked and I haven't fiddled with anything since I've been back to know if I could switch between public and private. I am having difficulty with the phone and tablet formats.

I'll make a post about it, I was thinking I could ask people for other suggestions than just the ones I know/think of too.

But like I say it won't be until tomorrow, I'm in the first of three airports now...

Seems to be fixed for me this afternoon, so worth going back into the posts you've had to make publicly recently and see if you can edit them
